We use data science and lateral thinking to understand contemporary biodiversity patterns and to discover novel approaches for predicting responses to climate change.

lab mission: The challenges facing science and society require bold, new approaches and perspectives. New approaches and perspectives emerge when we combine diversity, open science, and community. For this reason, our lab is centered around
diverse perspectives: together we positively challenge long-standing ecological theories, assumptions, and conventions;
data science and open science: these create opportunities for innovation and on-ramps for STEM careers;
building community: through meaningful collaborations that are respectful of diverse individual needs and contributions.

In collaboration with Zooniverse and Microsoft’s AI for Earth, we are using artificial intelligence to extract wing traits from millions of digitized museum specimens.

Unusual Soils
The central thesis of plant ecology is that climate drives the world’s diversity gradients. Soils, however, play a large and overlooked role. Using satellite imagery, geospatial data, and botanical records we are discovering how soils and climate interact to give rise to some of the world’s most diverse, strange, and seemingly inhabitable ecosystems.
